NH₃ Kraken – for Amogy

First 100% ammonia-to-power tug launched, demonstrating new technologies

C-Job has helped to pave the way for a greener shipping industry as a knowledge partner for Amogy,a dedicated specialist in ammonia-based energy solutions. We accommodated integration of the company’s revolutionary ammonia-to-power system into the tugboat NH₃ Kraken, and supported onsite execution activities at the shipyard, including modernization, construction, engine removal, and other challenges.

The NH₃ Kraken tugboat was originally constructed in 1957 and following modernization has become both the first carbon-free, ammonia-powered vessel to set sail, as well as the first US Jones Act vessel fuelled by ammonia.

We used risk-based design to overcome the challenges of using ammonia as a fuel onboard the vessel. C-Job’s methodology was applied to design areas including the mitigation of ammonia emissions, design precautions around potential leaks, and principal design choices to manage hazardous and dangerous zones.

The converted tug is classed as a hybrid vessel due to Amogy’s ammonia-to-electric power system.

The onsite work, using C-Job’s extensive knowledge of modernizing and repowering vessels with modern and out-of-the-box technologies, is an example of how we work with clients to implement systems that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in shipping.
